Walking London : Thirty Original Walks In and Around London

This book is a gem
I used this guide while walking in London two years ago, and I'm taking it to London again this summer. The variety of walks is a joy. I did not see this book on sale while in London, and some English friends saw mine and wanted a copy for themselves. No wonder--it's that good. If you like to walk and do other exploring besides the usual London tourist things, then don't go to England without a copy of this book in your suitcase or backpack. My only suggestion to the author is to bind future editions of the the book in a way that the chapters can be removed and replaced. So I wouldn't have to carry the whole book along, I tore the pages out for each walk I did, and then taped them back in place afterward, but there must be a better way.

Brilliant Walks
Highly recommended if you are planning an extended stay in London, or have been there a few times already and seen the major sites.

My favorite memories of six months spent working in London were of the walks I took from this book just about every weekend. Some of the walks are short enough that you can do two or three in a day, depending on what adventures arise. The best for me was Kew to Hammersmith, along the Thames, an all day walk, where I had tea in a church basement, a pint in a pub on Strand-on-the-Green, got caught in a rainstorm in a church graveyard, got lost in the woods on the grounds of Chiswick Manor...my workmates were very impressed, and started asking to come along!

Reading is seeing in this case
Want to go to London, without leaving home? Or write about an adventure in London? This work is golden.

Washington Irving : Bracebridge Hall, Tales of a Traveller, The Alhambra (Library of America)
Published in Hardcover by Library of America (May, 1991)
Authors: Washington Irving and Andrew B. Myers

Wait until you get back
I think this book is much more enjoyable if you read it after you have visited the Alhambra; two Moorish palaces that sit on top of a mountain in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range of Spain, palaces of incredible architecture and setting, the last outpost of the Moors in Spain. Christopher Columbus waited for 6 years before Queen Isabell would give him ships, she made him wait until the Moors were driven out of Spain. When the Alhambra finally falls, Coloumbus is given permission and ships for his quest a few days later, and the next year the Spanish Inquisition starts.
All of this comes to you if you visit the very romantic/historic city of Granada and the Alhambra, and after seeing the Alhambra restored, having walked its rooms and grounds, having listened to the fountains, letting your immagination run, then read this book, after you return home. Washington Irving's stunt of taking up residence in the rundown, forgotten Alhambra of his time seems even more fantastic. In fact, if you are going to Spain, buy a copy of this book in Granada; they are sold everywhere in different languages, and have pictures of paintings done in the period around Irving's stay. If you haven't been to the Alhambra, you should go.

Don't go to Spain without packing this book!
"Tales of the Alhambra" is must-reading for the traveler in Spain. Irving is best remembered in this country for his collections of American folklore, like the stories of Rip Van Winkle and the Headless Horseman, but in Spain they remember him for the Alhambra stories -- in fact, there's a hotel named in his honor in Granada. Irving lived in that beautiful old Moorish palace at a time when it was a neglected ruin, and his wonderful descriptions, interspersed with the folk-tales that he collected from the people of Granada, helped to spark interest in repairing and restoring the monument. The folk tales, told in Irving's inimitable, witty style, usually deal with romantic elopements, or buried treasure, or both. My personal favorite is the story of the young prince living in the Generalife (the beautiful summer palace) who learned the language of the birds. That one is fantasy, but it's true that there was hidden treasure in the Alhambra: the palace itself, its architecture and decoration, and we have Irving to thank for rediscovering it.

Travel companion
A great book to read while traveling in spain. If you are going to Alhambra, read this book! It will bring the palace alive for you. The writing is very accessable, and easy to follow for having been written so long ago.

Self Improvement?
Working hard, keeping your nose clean and the promotions will come and you will be successful. NOT. The book is filled with REAL LIFE EXAMPLES of why working hard doesn't always work. This is the best book on the market today if you want to protect what you have and earn what you deserve. The book will also help those who want to move ahead and steer clear of the traps and potholes. Very easy to read and apply.

The careers bible
This book is a bible for those who want to boost a career. Life is too short to learn from all mistakes. So this books helps you do prevent mistakes and leads to insight how to use the best office politics without losing your self-respect.

It's full of clear real-life situations to make office-politics-rules understandable. I should have had this book when a started my career after the University. It would have saved me time, being fired and frustration.

Iv'e recommended this book to all my brothers and my best-friend.

Useful
I first must admit I haven't finished it (I almost never finish a business book...) but anytime I've been reading a page I found some really useful advice !

Walking without sitting down?
Thanks so much for this excellent book. It is one of the best books about the practice of this Way on WHOLE day. I don't practice Dzogchen but it is easy to see that the quality of teachings of this book are superior. One of the best books of practical Buddhism that I have read.

The simple way to expose the deepest matters and the humility and high knowledge shows the great level of practice of the author and the importance of this Tibetan school. Helpful to any Buddha follower. Excellent purchase. Recommended 100%.

Great Book
This is one of the best books I have ever read on Tibetan culture and religion. It is clear and concise. It is extremely informative, revealing practices that have been kept secret, for some unknown reason, for centuries. A great book!

Yung-Drung Bon Monastic Centre
Recently, in the West, a number of books have appeared on the subject of Dzog Chen. This is the first book to describe the Bon-Po point of view of these high teachings. This pleases me greatly. They are derived from the Zhang Zhung Nyan Gyud, which is the most essential within the Bon-Po Dzog Chen.

Lama Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche has been trained in this lineage since he was fourteen by the Venerable Lopon Sangye Tenzin and the Venerable Lopon Tenzin Namdak. From the early days on, he has shown a special gift when it comes to these meditations.

The book is written in clear and concise English. This is particularly important as the teachings are very elaborate and at times hard to understand. The simple language used clarifies tremendously. The authentic descriptions of Dzog Chen give the serious student ample material to practice Dzog Chen.

This book doesn't include stories; it explains the quintessential aspects of Dzog Chen. In other words, it gets right to the point. Especially the chapters such as the ones on Contemplation and Integration. I highly recommend this book to any serious student of these high teachings.

Zoo Faces (Cuddly Cloth Books)

Zoo Faces (Farm Faces, and other of the Cuddly Cloth Books)
Like Clare, we needed multiples of these books, too ... just in case. Our 13-month old likes the fringey horse's mane (Farm Faces) and the silky elephant's ear (Zoo Faces). It's definitely the sleepy-time snuggly of choice. And it's something to look at, too!

Zoo Faces -- a necessity at bedtime
Our first child, Charlie, first fell in love with Zoo Faces when he was just 3 months old. At the time, I told my sister-in-law (an experienced mother) that this infant loved books, and she just laughed. But when she saw Charlie chortle with glee at Zoo Faces, she was convinced! It must be something to do with the book's 3-diimensional characteristics. It is produced with colorful, different textured cloths layered to create sweet depictions of various zoo animals -- a lion, a tiger, a giraffe, an elephant, etc. Charlie is now 13 months old, but has not lost his affection for Zoo Faces. In fact, this book is now his virtual 'blankie'. Charlie requires Zoo Faces in order to go 'night night' or to take a nap. He is particularly fond of the last page, the penguin, which he folds so that the soft, silky penguin flipper presses against his nose. In this way, he sucks his thumb and calms himself, inevitably going to sleep peacefully. Our first copy of Zoo Faces was a hand-me-down. We were perfectly content with this one copy until we were on vacation recently. At the airport, the security gate almost 'ate' Zoo Faces! With this incident, we realized how vulnerable we were, having only one copy of this book. Since then, I've been trying to purchase a second, back-up copy to no avail. Finally, tonight, I've signed onto Amazon.com as a last resort and am relieved to learn we are in luck! I realize our testimony may be a little far-fetched for most parents. But, for us, Zoo Faces has been our most important parenting tool. We won't leave home without it!

**What a beautifully constructed book!!**
Zoo Faces is one of the best cloth books I have found. The animals are bright and interesting. The pages are soft and great for chewing. Thanks, Amazon.com.

100 Ultimate Blues Riffs (Book&CD)

Learn what makes blues "blues ".
For someone coming from playing a different style (classification ) of music this book is a must have. You can use it constantly as a reference tool.It could be useful to a beginner if they have the time and energy to spend with it but, would be more useful to the intermediate player. I'd listened to a lot of blues thinking that I would pick up the style from c.d's (Jimmy Yancy,Ray Charles,Vann Walls,Jay McShann Meade Lux Lewis etc ).I did pick up a lot but was left feeling I was missing a lot,and that's where thhe 100 Ultimate Blues Riffs came to my help.My reading is fairly good but I think that with blues a c.d is a must so that you can get more of a "feel " for the music. At first,I thought playing blues was very simple and that the music itself was very simple.100 Ultimate Blues Riffs has helped me understand how to play and how to listen to Blues;and how to appreciate the music.

Learn exactly what makes blues different from other styles
For someone coming from playing a different style (classification ) of music this book is a must have. You can use it constantly as a reference tool.It could be useful to a beginner if they have the time and energy to spend with it but, would be more useful to the intermediate player. Excellent Blues Riff Book
It has been somewhat difficult for the intermediate/advanced piano player to find a book of riffs and melodic ideas to add to their blues repetoire. This book, "100 Ultimate Riffs" is just what you're looking for..and it delivers what it's name implies. "100 Ultimate Riffs" provides a good mixture of chords and individual note runs that you would expect from such a book. It also provides riffs in different keys, wih a variety of rhythms.

NOTE: The riffs may be too daunting for the beginner, but anyone from early intermediate onwards will find useful and fun blues riffs in this book.

This is not a "how to" book, nor is it a compliation of blues "standards". This book does not provide theory or concept on progressions, turnarounds, etc....it is what it's name implies, a riffs book.

Ancient Egyptian Jewelry
Published in Paperback by Harry N Abrams (March, 1997)
Author: Carol Andrews
Average review score:

Excellent resource and the best book in its field
I happened upon this book while visiting the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, and it is well worth every penny. Copious full color photographs illustrate the many types of jewelry worn by the Ancient Egyptians, both in life and as funerary pieces. Manufacturing techniques are also discussed somewhat, and the Egyptian names for items are also provided. This superb reference is not only a great replacement for the out-of-print "Jewels of the Pharaohs" by Cyril Aldred, it surpasses this earlier work by providing much more detail and information.

excellent and well documented study
I have met the author personally when taking a class through a Stanford Univ. graduate program and was impressed with her background and extensive knowledge of Egyptology and jewelery. As a gemologist and lifelong student of Egyptology, I could recommend this book on its contents alone, but the author, herself, is extraordinary.

Beautiful and informative look at Egyptian jewelry designs.
This is a beautiful book. The pictures and stories of the jewelry are fascinating. It is a great resource for the craftsperson interested in Egyptian styles or for anyone interested in Ancient Egypt or creative jewelry design.

And God Changed His Mind
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (September, 1999)
Authors: Andrew, Susan Devore Williams, and Brother Andrew
Average review score:

A Blood Infusion for Feeble Prayer
This is a remarkable book. From the man who was responsible for millions of Bibles smuggled behind the Iron Curtain, he tells his secret strategy. He refers to scriptures in proving that Christians (and Jews) may indeed justify asking God to change his mind. Then he gives examples of when he did just that, and GOD DID CHANGE HIS MIND. He charges the heresy of Christian fatalism with the responsibility for the powerlessness of many of today's Christians. He points out that Christianity (and Judaism)is the ONLY religion that denies the immovability of the will of God. If you are into prayer, try it, you'll like it.

Best book on intercessory prayer
Brother Andrew knows what prayer is all about, and this book makes plain the ways in which God longs to communicate with us. Biblically sound, highly readable. Exciting stuff! It will transform your prayer life.

Excellent Prayer Resource
This is an excellent book on the subject of Christian prayer. I suggest it to anyone interested in praying or communicating with God in more dynamic means.

Winter time on the North Shore
Andy Martin wrote a vey nice book, by interviewing all the world tour pros, you get more knowledge of what goes on On the North Shore of Oahu. I was stoked to see there also was a movie about it. Jeroen Mutsaars

A witty and inteligent insight into the world of surfing
I really enjoyed this book, it left me wanting much more. A well researched and descriptive look at the bizare world of big wave surfers. Particularly suited to those who have not and have no intention of surfing big waves themselves, but would like to get inside the head of the people who do. It has a travelogue style, I think it would appeal to readers of Eric Newby or even books like "A year in Provence". His other book "Coming down the Mountain", takes a similar approach, but to World cup Down Hill skiing. Again a good read, but for me not quite so riveting as this one. Give it a try

THIS BOOK RATES AS HIGH AS THE BARRELS ANDY WRITES ABOUT.
A great book about surfing, people, travel and polynesian history. It's both laid back and pumping at the same time and any kind of surfer would get a good feeling from reading it.
